There will be a Halkin lunch on Tuesday 21 May 2024, when we are delighted to welcome James Steel HSBC’s Chief Precious Metals Analyst in New York.
Jim joined HSBC in May 2006. Previously he ran the New York research department for Refco, a large US commodities brokerage house, and was in charge of energy, precious and base metals analysis. Jim also worked for The Economist in the Economist Intelligence Unit as an economist specialising in commodity producing nations, where he also worked on the Middle East desk.
Jim’s primary duties at HSBC include the production of daily market reports, including long term outlooks for the precious metals. These include supply/demand and price forecasts, as well as qualitative analyses. Jim is a frequent speaker at commodities related conferences. He is often quoted in the financial media and frequently appears on CNBC and Bloomberg. Jim holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in economics from UK and US universities. Jim is also a member of the International Precious Metals Institute and the New York Energy Forum.

OUTLOOK FOR THE HONG KONG ECONOMY AND FINANCIAL SYSTEM
John Greenwood, founder and chief economist of the International Monetary Monitor started his career in 1970 as a visiting research fellow at the University of Tokyo. In 1974 he joined GT Management as Chief Economist, based initially in Hong Kong and later in San Francisco. The firm was acquired by Invesco in 1998. When GT Management merged with Invesco, he became Chief Economist with responsibility for providing economic analysis and forecasts to portfolio managers and clients until he retired in 2021.
As editor of Asian Monetary Monitor in 1983, he proposed a currency board scheme for stabilising the Hong Kong dollar that is still in place today. John was a director of the Hong Kong Futures Exchange Clearing Corporation (1987-91), and in 1992 became a council member of the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong. He was also an economic adviser to the Hong Kong Government. He has been a member of the Committee on Currency Board Operations of the HKMA since 1998.
John’s most famous book is a compendium of essays written in Asian Monetary Monitor together with additional explanatory text and published by Hong Kong University Press: “Hong Kong’s Link to the US Dollar: Origins and Evolution” (1st edition 2007, 2nd updated edition 2022).
John is a Fellow of the Institute for Applied Economics, Global Health, and the Study of Business Enterprise at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. He holds an MA and an Honorary PhD from the University of Edinburgh.

Allister Heath became editor of The Sunday Telegraph in April 2017. His columns are widely read for their penetrating insights and provocative commentary on economic and financial affairs.
He has worked for The Daily Telegraph, initially as a columnist, from 2012. From 2014 to 2017, he was deputy director for content and the paper’s deputy editor. Previously, he was editor of City A.M., a business newspaper, from 2008 to 2014; he was an associate editor at The Spectator, continuing in this role until 2008, and a contributing editor at the magazine from 2008 to 2011.
Heath undertook a number of roles at The Business, a London-based magazine. In 2002, he was its economics correspondent, then from 2002 to 2005 was economics editor and leader writer, rising to the roles of deputy editor (2005–06) and editor (2007–08).
From 2000 to 2002, Heath was editor of the European Journal and head of research at the European Foundation. Since then, he has mostly worked in journalism. In 2006, he became an associate editor at The Spectator, continuing in this role until 2008. He was a contributing editor at the magazine from 2008 to 2011.
Heath has also been Wincott Visiting Professor of Business Journalism at the University of Buckingham (2005–2007). He was chairman of the 2020 Tax Commission from 2011 to 2012, authoring The Single Income Tax: Final Report of the 2020 Tax Commission for it in 2012.
His first book, A Flat Tax: Towards a British Model (co-written with D. B. Smith), was published in 2006.[6][7][8] The same year, his book At a Price: the true cost of public spending, was also published.

John is Chief Economist at Tricio Investment Advisors, a consulting firm providing investment research and advice to professional investors including IFAs, family offices and fund managers. He has over 45 years’ experience in international economic research, investment advice and risk analysis. He was Chief Economist and Strategist for American Express Bank and Head of Macroeconomic Research for Standard Chartered. He has sat on asset allocation committees in London, New York and Geneva and advised wealth managers and private clients around the world.
John contributed to the CFA training programme materials on Capital Market Expectations and has run numerous investment training programmes for clients. He is a Fellow and former Chairman of the UK Society of Professional Economists.
His books include Investors Guide to Economic Fundamentals, (2002) and Bubbles and how to survive them, (2004) which warned of the risks of a US housing crash.
