Halkin is delighted to welcome Brian Griffiths, Lord Griffiths of Fforestfach.

Brian was head of the Prime Minister’s policy unit between 1985 and 1990 and has unique insights into the relationship between the offices of the PM and the Chancellor of the Exchequer. He will reflect on the successes and failures of past partnerships and address the economic and political challenges of the new government headed by Liz Truss.  

Brian was born in Swansea, Wales in 1941. He studied at  the LSE 1960-65, where he became a Member of the  Economics Department 1965-1977. He was appointed a professor City University, 1978-85 and a Director of the Bank of England 1981-85. He became the Head of the Prime Minister’s Policy Unit 1985-90, and then an adviser at Goldman Sachs from 1990 until his retirement in 2021. He was a Board Member of Goldman Sachs International. He has been a member of various corporate boards (1991-2021) including FTSE 100, NYSE and Nasdaq. He is serving member of the House of Lords since 1991 and a Member of the Select Committee on Economic Affairs.
